FEATURE STORY
How winemaking is going circular
One way to manage wine waste is to turn it into higher value products. Luckily, byproducts of winery contain a rich cocktail of chemical compounds that can be tapped for nutraceutical, health, and beauty applications.
After almost 4 months, the materials that were small enough to pass through a sieve were sold as Grade A compost for agricultural use, while the remaining ones were returned to the composting tunnel until broken down to the desired level.
TĂ´mTex raises $4.5M for biodegradable shrimp leather
TĂ´mTex uses raw chitosan, a biopolymer found in seafood shells and mushrooms, to create its 100% biodegradable materials, including Series WS and new Series M made from mushroom waste.
Lavie Bio expands bio-inoculant product to durum and barley
The 2023 trials for durum and barley in the US exceeded expectations, with an average production improvement of 8.3% for durum and 6.6% for barley. Yalos™ combines two natural microbes discovered by Lavie Bio’s advanced BDD platform.
Bio-based packaging from beer waste: BioSupPack project makes strides
The project has started a new phase to develop sustainable packaging solutions using PHA derived from beer production residues, while demonstrating a feasible recycling process for these biobased plastics.
Through using plants to take CO2 directly from the air and convert it into sugars for feedstock for the material, Floreon’s bioplastics production can reduce carbon emissions by up to 7x compared to traditional oil-based plastics.
