2022 was the year of vegan and renewable textiles - the biobased segment that received among the highest financing rounds of the year. In 2023, things shifted somewhat, with a swing back to packaging and bioplastics. The VC world has been embracing a new generation of substitutes that aims to address the environmental problems posed by earlier biobased plastics.

    The use of CirculenRenew PP, derived from a bio-based feedstock including bio-based wastes and residual oils, results in a 70% lower product carbon footprint compared to fossil-based PP over the life cycle.

    The biomaterials startup specializing in plant-based fur alternatives also unveiled its inaugural luxury material brand, Savian. It will feature fur, shearling, and fleece-like fabrics made from plant fibers utilizing BioFluff’s proprietary tech.

    Plant-biotech company GreenLab has developed a proprietary technology that enables proteins and enzymes to be grown within corn kernels. Ginkgo is offering their services to help mitigate research and development risks for GreenLab.

    Samyang Innochem secures ISCC Plus Certification for sustainable biomaterial Isosorbide

    The chemical subsidiary of Samyang Group has acquired international certification for its white bio material, Isosorbide, a material derived from 100% biomass. It is chemically processed from starch extracted from plant resources such as corn.
